Coach Garner Leads By Example -- Headed to the USTA National Amateur Championships

Coach Ross Garner, our men's head tennis coach and women's assistant coach, is leading the way for his student-athletes on and off the court.  In his spare time, he is a member of the Fig Garden Swim & Racquet Club over-18 tennis team at the 4.5 level and they just became the NorCal Section Champions!

He presently has a 5-0 doubles record with his playing partner Darren Woo.  Their recent team victory at the Nor Cal's has qualified them for the 2023 USTA National Championship which will be held on October 6-8 in Surprise, AZ at the USTA Tennis & Racquet Complex.

The format for team play is 2 singles and 3 doubles, of which Garner & Woo will be paired together. This will be Coach Garner's 2nd appearance at nationals.  The Reedley native placed 3rd at the USTA National Championship back in 2018.  A former member of the 2008 FCC 3C2A runner-up team back in 2008 (when RC did not field a tennis team); Ross has continued to be an active player and has done so at a very high level. The 4.5 rating level is the one of the highest levels of competition in the USTA and will showcase many former collegiate and pro players that will prove to be a tough challenge at nationals. Garner stated that,  "I'm just happy to have the opportunity to keep playing at a high level.  There will be a lot of good players at Nationals, but we're going all out".

And, the Tiger's will be pulling for him and cheering him on!

Coach Garner has been the RC head coach since 2012 and is excited to have the Tigers return back to the Central Valley Conference due to the addition of men's tennis at Porterville College & COS.  Garner stated, "It will be nice to have local rivalries again and hopefully encourage more participation and opportunities for the local high school players to come and compete for Reedley College".  This year the Tigers will have the largest field of players in program history at 16.  The Tigers won their Big 8 Championship back in 2017 and are setting their sights on winning it all in the CVC this coming spring.

Congrats and Good Luck to Coach Ross Garner  ….. We hope he can serve up a championship victory!
