Thrilling Win Over COS Puts Reedley Baseball In Second Place

The Saturday win over the College of the Sequoias Giants was about as exciting as it can get.

First, Jake Renteria put the Tigers ahead 3-2 with a towering two-run homer over the left-field. Renteria drove in Reedley's other run with a sacrifice fly.

Then, Tiger closer Cameron Gallardo loaded the bases with nobody out on a single and two walks. Harrison Moy came on and got the next three outs on a strikeout, pop up and a caught stealing.

With the win, Reedley (7-2, 15-5) moved into sole possession of second place in the Central Valley Conference behind 6-0 Fresno City. Sequoias dropped to 6-3 and 18-4.

"All three games could have gone either way," said Tiger head coach Steve Pearse. "I thought our at-bats were really good on Thursday down there."

The Tigers faced perfect game pitcher Benjamin Petersen twice: once in relief on March 3 and as a starter on Saturday, "Petersen is tough to pick up. You come across pitchers in this game that's it's tough to pick the ball up on and he is one of those guys. He's tough,"

The coach said Renteria was the right guy at the plate in the bottom of the eighth Saturday. "Cause he can hit the ball out of any ballpark. (Danny) Gamez drawing that walk was big to give him an opportunity to do that. He worked a 2-0 count, got a good pitch and got a good swing on it."

Pearse told Gallardo that he has picked us up all year with his performance. "And now, we had to pick him up for the first time. Without him, we are really probably 11-9. But that's the life of a closer. You got to have a short memory. Like I told him and the team, you're going to be closing for us next week."

Reedley will have a three-game series with Merced this week, hosting the Blue Devils on Thursday night and traveling to Merced Tuesday night and Saturday afternoon.

The Tigers opened the COS series with a 4-3 loss in Reedley on March 3 before 5-2 and 3-2 wins.
