Reedley Dominates Gavilan and Contra Costa in Commanding Victories

December 19, 2024: Reedley 108, Gavilan 31

In a jaw-dropping display of skill and teamwork, the Reedley women's basketball team delivered an overwhelming performance against Gavilan, securing a resounding 108-31 victory. From the opening whistle, Reedley took control of the game, dominating both ends of the floor and establishing a lead that Gavilan struggled to recover from.

The first quarter was a signal of what was to come, as Reedley exploded for 37 points while holding Gavilan to just 7. The disparity in offensive firepower was apparent, with Reedley shooting 46.1% from the field, including a scorching 40% from three-point range. Jacqueline Ruiz led the charge, finishing with 22 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists, shooting 6-12 from beyond the arc. Taylor Sutherland also had an impressive outing, contributing 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Tianna Sutherland added 14 points and 8 rebounds.

The second and third quarters saw Reedley continue to extend their lead, with their defense suffocating Gavilan, forcing turnovers and limiting the home team's scoring opportunities. Karisma Truong came off the bench and dropped 20 points in just 19 minutes of play, adding 4 three-pointers to her tally. By the time the final buzzer sounded, Reedley had accumulated 54 rebounds, 25 assists, and 108 points, leaving no doubt about their dominance.

Gavilan's offense struggled mightily throughout the game, with no player scoring in double digits. They finished with just 31 points on a dismal 15.6% shooting from the field. The lack of scoring was compounded by their inability to find any rhythm, and the game quickly slipped out of their hands. Reedley's defense stifled any attempt Gavilan made to mount a comeback.

January 3, 2025: Reedley 103, Contra Costa 25

In a similarly dominant fashion, Reedley crushed Contra Costa 103-25 in their first game of the new year. Just like against Gavilan, Reedley exhibited an incredible offensive output while their defense remained impenetrable. The game was all but decided after the first quarter, where Reedley quickly built a 25-9 lead and continued to pull away in the subsequent periods.

The game was a testament to Reedley's depth, with contributions from players across the board. While there were no standout individual performances like Ruiz's 22 points against Gavilan, the team collectively wore down Contra Costa with their superior shooting and passing. Reedley shot 41.6% from the field, including an efficient 40% from three-point range, while distributing 25 assists to keep the offense flowing smoothly.

Contra Costa, on the other hand, struggled mightily throughout the contest. They finished the game with a mere 25 points, shooting just 18.8% from the field. Their inability to score was exacerbated by their 40 turnovers, which Reedley capitalized on for easy fast-break points. Reedley's defense was stifling, and Contra Costa never had a chance to find any offensive rhythm.

The standout performance of the game came from Karisma Truong, who, similar to her performance against Gavilan, contributed heavily to the victory with 20 points, including 4 three-pointers. Other notable contributors included Tianna Sutherland (14 points, 7 rebounds) and Jacqueline Ruiz (12 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists).

Looking Ahead

After these two commanding victories, the Tigers begin Central Valley Conference play and are poised to continue their dominant run as they prepare for their next matchup. Finishing non-conference play at 8-8, the Tigers start CVC play on Jan 8th @ Lemoore College. With contributions from players across the roster and a stifling defense, they are shaping up to be one of the most formidable teams in the league this season. The Tigers return home on Jan 25th vs. Fresno City at 3pm.
