Tiger Soccer on a Roll

With three.matches under their belts, the Reedley College Tiger women's soccer has played more games than any other in the Central Valley Conference.

The most important win came on Monday on the road, as the Tigers defeated Lake Tahoe 1-0. "Today was a hard fought match," said Tiger head coach Onesta Francis in an afternoon text message, "Tahoe had more shots and more possession. But we showed great team, toughness, and togetherness.  Goalkeeper Areal Guzman of Reedley was credited was 11 saves. Defender Jennifer Martinez (Exeter)  had seven tackles and assisted the game winning goal on a beautiful scoop pass."

Lake Tahoe stats showed that the goal was a team goal. But Francis wrote that Nazira Nunez (Visalia) scored her third goal of the season with a powerful volley that hit the back of the net before the keeper could react, "Captain Diana Rico (Dinuba) was a big reason we were hard to break down. Her communication and passing was crucial. Last year's leading scorer Krysta Casas also played well, sacrificing some of her personal attack to help the team defense stay tight. It was a good team win."

On Aug. 29 in Reedley on the home pitch, Reedley edged Modesto 3-2. All but one of the goals was scored in the first half, That second half goal, the second of the match, turned out to be the game winner in the 49th minute, Jessica Batres (Monache, Porterville) scored the game's first goal, on an assist by Rico in the seventh minute. Modesto took a 2-1 lead before Nunez tied it on an assist from Batres.

Reedley opens Central Valley Conference play next Tuesday, Sept. 12 at home against a 1-1 Taft College squad, This Friday, the Tigers travel to Aptos to face the 1-1  Carrillo College Seahawks.
