CSM blanks Reedley 23-0 in home opener.
SAN MATEO -- College of San Mateo shutout visiting Reedley College, 23-0, as the reigning Northern California football champions opened their home season at College Heights Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Bulldogs, ranked No. 2 in the state and No. 1 in Northern California by state coaches, impressed with their defense and special teams play, improving to 2-0 on the 2024 season. "We scored 17 points on special teams," said CSM coach Tim Tulloch. "But our game was sloppy."
If it were not for some miscues by the young Bulldogs, the score might have been even more one-sided.
Two impressive touchdowns were called back on penalties.
Hassan Mahasin had an 85-yard punt return negated by a block-in-the-back penalty call or the halftime lead might have been bigger than 13-0.
Trevon Watson started the second half, returning Reedley's only kickoff 91 yards for a TD to make it 20-0. "That was his first kickoff return," said Tulloch. "Once he got hold of it, he was gone."
Lolo Mataele had a 9-yard TD run reversed on a holding penalty at the beginning of the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs settled for at 35-yard field goal by Dieter Kelly, his third of the game. Kelly had a 48-yard field goal in the first quarter for the initial 3-0 lead – and the only points the Bulldogs really needed.
Despite limited statistical opportunities against the Tigers, Mahasin is still averaging 148 all-purpose yards per game, among the best by all NorCal National Division athletes. Mataele led all game rushers with 57 yards on 15 carries.
Kelly had 11 points in the game and now has an early state-leading five field goals in the first two games.
CSM quarterback Conner Annicharico completed 13 of 22 passes for 98 yards (and 120 yards of total offense), including an 8-yard TD to Jeremiah Hill in the first quarter. The Bulldogs did not allow a sack. .
CSM held the Tigers to just 139 total offensive yards, a net of 8 yards on the ground. Five San Mateo defenders recorded sacks: Andrew Buck, Ezra Funa, Odera Okaka, Fita Vi, and John Gayer. Buck had two additional tackles for loss. Reedley quarterbacks completed only 13 of 30 pass attempts for 131 net yards.
9-GAME NORCAL WIN STREAK: San Mateo has now won its last nine games against Northern California foes, including a NorCal opening playoff win over Modesto, 41-19, last November.
TOP 10 CLASH UP NEXT:
With top-ranked Riverside City College, the defending state champions, suffering a last minute loss to Golden West College on Saturday, CSM could move up from its No. 2 state poll position when coaches vote on Monday. The Bulldogs are set to visit century-old rival and top 10 ranked Modesto JC (also 2-0) on Saturday afternoon at 1.
