IFor the first time in five years or 35 games, the Reedley College Tiger football team lost a game by shutout on Saturday.
The 2021 Tigers were shut out for the first time since a 51-0 loss to Merced in 2016 as Butte College blanked the Tigers 34-0 in the Gridiron Classic Bowl at Cowan Stadium in Oroville.
Reedley drove down into the red zone on two of their first three possessions before losing the ball on interceptions.
"It was one of those types of games," said Tiger head coach Rob Hartenfels. "But the team got the experience of traveling and staying in a hotel."
Reedley had their chances. After trailing 13-0 at halftime, the Tigers drove inside the Butte 5-yard line before losing possession. The coach said one of the interceptions came on a running play.
"But the kids still fought until the last series," said the first-year head coach.
Five different Roadrunners scored touchdowns in the contest. Reedley had 34 more passing yards (235 to 201) but lost the rushing battle by a 342-67 margin. Butte averaged 8.1 yards per rushing play compared to 2.4 for Reedley. In the game, the Roadrunners held an 8.5 to 4.7 yard per play average, Both teams ran 64 offensive plays.
The Tigers converted only 2 of 14 third-down situations and 0 of 3 on fourth down compared to 4 of 10 and 2 of 3, respectively. Butte finished the afternoon with six quarterback sacks. Butte outgained Reedley 543-302.
Both Butte and Reedley finished with records of 7-4. A banquet and awards night will be held in January for the Tiger squad.
Valley Conference teams went 2-2 in the postseason as College of the Sequoias edged Merced in overtime on Thursday night while Modesto defeated Diablo Valley on Saturday. Last week, Fresno City lost to the College of San Mateo in the NorCal semifinals.
