Women's Golf Takes Third At Morro Bay

Day Two Update

Facing the top teams from throughout the state, the Reedley College women's golf team took third place in the North-South Invitational at the par-72 Morro Bay Golf course on Sunday and Monday.

The Tigers' team score of 329-336-665 was 29 shots behind champion College of the Canyons and three shots back of second-place College of the Desert. Reedley was one shot better than fourth place Saddleback.

Monica Yu led Reedley with an 81-79-160, good for a tie for ninth place. Other Tiger scores were Serena Di Mauro (79-86--165), Alyssa Bendure (84-84--168), Serena Garcia (85-87-172), Mya Chao (92-91-183) and McKenzie Quinn 95-96--191).

"I'm proud of the Reedley girls," said head coach Scott Stark in a Monday night text message. "Finished as the highest finishing team in Northern California. We played solid golf but could have played better. Difficult golf course that requires a lot of local knowledge to play your best. Looking forward to a return for the State Championships in November. A great learning experience for the Tigers."

Reedley returns to action on Sept. 26 with a Big 8 Conference dual match at Taft before hosting a Big 8 tournament at the Kings River CC in Kingsburg on Oct. 3.

The Reedley College Tigers played at the 11th annual North-South Invitational, a 36-hole event hosted by Santa Barbara City College.  The opening round was held on Sunday morning at Morro Bay Golf Course, and the Tigers posted a good round of 329.  After Day 1 the Tigers were in 3rd place out of 14 teams from both northern and southern California.  Sophomore Serena DiMauro led the way with a round of 79.  Serena made 3 Birdies on the day! Freshman Monica Yu carded a round of 81, followed by Alyssa Bendure's round of 84.  Serena Garcia posted a round of 85 to complete the scoring for the Tigers. The Tigers felt that they let some opportunities get away on the day, but were pleased with their ball striking.  The putting is what let the Tigers down a bit. The early morning 2nd and final round were solid as the Tigers played consistent golf.  Reedley posted a team total of 336, 7 shots worse than Round #1, and unfortunately did not improve their overall team standings from Day 1.  The Tigers had the 4th best score on the day, which was mostly cloudy, foggy and cold.  Monica Yu paced the Tigers with a nice round of 79.  Alyssa Bendure shot an 84, Serena DiMauro shot an 86, but with a +3 over par back nine after a very difficult start. Serena Garcia shot an 87 to round out the scoring for Reedley College.  The Tigers finished the tournament with a team total of 665, which placed them in 3rd place overall.  The Tigers' finish was the best ever for the program at this event, and Reedley was also the best Northern California team in the tournament.  On an Individual note, Freshman Monica Yu was the best player for the Tigers by shooting a 160 (81-79) for the 2 rounds. Overall, it was a good way to spend the weekend on the Central Coast, and try to learn as much about the Morro Bay Golf Course as possible for a return to the State Tournament in November! The Tigers look forward to their next conference match at Buena Vista Golf Course in Taft on Thursday.  A shotgun start is scheduled for 12:00 noon for the dual match against Taft College.
