Tigers Sweep Cabrillo In Round One Of The Playoffs

After sweeping Cabrillo College in Aptos last weekend, the Reedley College softball team is just two victories away from reaching the California Community College Athletic Association softball championship in Bakersfield on May 16-19.

But to get there, head Coach Kathy Kuball's Tigers need to get two victories over the second-ranked team in Northern California, the 36-4 San Jose City College Jaguars in San Jose on Friday and Saturday.

The first game of the best-of-three series is scheduled to start at 2 pm Friday before the action begins Saturday.

Reedley advanced by sweeping Cabrillo. It took 11 innings to decide Friday's series opener, won by the Tigers 7-4. A run-scoring single off the bat of Aunika Castellanos put Reedley ahead to stay before all-Northern California selection Sandra Vallejo added some insurance with a two-run homer.

Reedley captured Saturday's contest by a 6-3 score, improving to 33-9 on the season.

Sophomore Emily Grimbeby was the winning pitcher in both games, improving her season record to 25-8 on the season.

"It was just good to get it done," said a happy head coach Kathy Kuball after the Saturday game. "We got enough runs on the board."

San Jose City College brings a 17-game winning streak into the Super Regionals after blanking Feather River by scores of 3-0 and 12-0. The Coast Conference South champions have been shut out by top-seeded College of San Mateo twice this season.

The Lady Tigers and Central Valley Conference champion College of the Sequoias were the only CVC teams to advance to the Super Regionals. Since COS was seeded one spot below the Tigers, they will face top-seeded College of San Mateo in the Super Regionals.

Third place Fresno City was eliminated after two losses to Sierra College while fourth place Porterville was swept by San Joaquin Delta.
