Tiger Softball Loses 1-0 Thriller In Monterey

Reedley College will try and bounce back from its first softball loss of 2019 Thursday when they are scheduled to host (weather permitting) Bakersfield and San Joaquin Delta.

The Lady Tigers are scheduled to face Bakersfield in the first contest of a tripleheader at 10 am. The Renegades take on San Joaquin Delta at noon before Reedley faces Delta at 2 pm.

Reedley's seven-game winning streak came to end late Saturday afternoon in Monterey as the undefeated Monterey Peninsula College Lobos edged the Lady Tigers.

A Tuesday, Feb. 12 twin bill with undefeated Sacramento City was scheduled to be played just after the deadline for this story.

Before the loss to MPC, Reedley had defeated Santa Rosa Junior College 11-3 earlier on Saturday in Monterey before sweeping a home doubleheader over Cuesta by scores of 19-0 and 7-6 in Reedley on Feb. 5.

The only base on balls allowed by Reedley ace pitcher Emily Grimbeby eventually scored the only run in the Tigers' loss to Monterey on Saturday. The sophomore from Clovis struck out 11 and allowed only two hits in the loss. Through Sunday's action, Grimbleby leads the state in strikeouts with 35.

Despite being shutout, Reedley leads the state in runs scored with 78.

Against Cuesta, the Tigers opened the first game with nine runs in the bottom of the first inning and 10 more in the second. Every starter had at least one hit in a 22-hit attack, led by four hits off the bat of Sam Lizaola. Aunika Castellanos drove in five runs with three hits. Amanda Beltran, who pitched two innings of relief of Grimbleby, joined Karlie Fien with three hits.

The Tigers had to come from behind in the second game after the Cougars scored three times in the top of the first. Reedley tied the contest with three in the bottom of the inning.

Reedley broke the 6-6 tie in the bottom of the sixth after Bobbie Falcon (who is tied for the state lead in stolen bases) led off with a triple before scoring on a two-out error.
