Reedley Football Set For The Battle Of The Pump

Reedley Football Set For The Battle Of The Pump
Saturday at 3:00 Reedley will host Fresno City College at Reedley High. This is the BATTLE OF THE PUMP. One of the oldest rivalries in JUCO football. Do not miss out on this game. The QB club will be selling dinners and plenty of local players will be facing off for the pump trophy.
This FCC-Reedley football series began in 1948 and has two gaps of time where the teams didn't play. The first gap ended in 1972 with the first Battle of the Pump. The Pump idea came about thanks to two former State Center Community College District board members, Harry Hiraoka and the late Lynn 'Doc' Ford. Water pumps were symbols of how critical water was, and still is, in the San Joaquin Valley. Hiraoka and Ford's idea was to 'pump up spirit' in the renewed rivalry and their fellow board members unanimously endorsed it. Ford found a pump, had it cleaned, chromed, and mounted on a wooden base. So, The Pump idea literally came from the top. It rests at an honored place in the athletics department of the winner. The location will be determined by the young players on the field. Enjoy the game and the tradition!
