TIgers Fall to Taft in CVC Opener

In the Central Valley Conference women's volleyball opener for both teams, the Taft College Cougars held off Reedley College rallies in each set Wednesday night to sweep the Lady Tigers 3-0.

Set scores were 25-21, 25-17 and 25-19. Reedley jumped out to a 6-3 lead in the opening set before the 2-7 Cougars scored seven straight points to take control. After trailing by five points, the Lady Tigers pulled to within three on two occasions before Taft won the set. The Lady Tigers rallied from an early 5-2 deficit in the second set to take a 10-7 before Taft scored eight of the next nine points.

In the final set, Reedley fell behind 19-9 early before the Lady Tigers pulled to within 20-19. But Taft scored the next five points to win the match.

Because of problems with a computer app, no individual statistics were available. Sophomores Madison Monis (Fowler) and Kristy Berry (Minarets) joined freshman Verenice Loya Alcocer (Lindsay) as Reedley's top hitters.

It was 45 years ago that the Lady Tigers started a women's volleyball team. This is the first time that their conference is up to 10 teams with the addition of West Hills Lemoore.

Reedley is back in action Friday in Ridgecrest facing Cerro Coso in a 5 pm match. Cerro Coso opened CVC action at home with a 3-2 win over the College of the Sequoias Giants, winning the deciding set 15-11.
