Tigers Win Big In The First Week

After one week of the 2018-19 women's basketball season, Reedley College is the highest scoring team in California.

With only six players in uniform, the Lady Tigers rolled to a season-opening 110-44 win at Modesto Junior College on Nov. 6. Two nights later in Reedley, head coach Dan Kilbert's squad jumped out to a 27-2 lead on the way to a 95-34 victory over the Hartnell College Panthers.

That adds up to an average score of 102-39.

But the competition is expected to get a lot tougher on Thursday, Nov. 15 as Reedley opens the Saddleback College Tournament against the 1-2 Gauchos at 7 pm in Mission Viejo. The tournament continues through Saturday.

The Lady Tigers return home for a 3 pm matchup with the Allan Hancock College Bulldogs on Tuesday, Nov. 20.

Balanced scoring and a tough defense has been the key to the two RC wins. Against MJC, Reedley jumped out to a 55-25 halftime lead before exploding for 65 second-half points.

In the win over Modesto, four Tigers scored 20 or more points. Sophomore Stephanie Cervantes (Dinuba) led the way with 24 points, followed by sophomore I'man Conley (Edison, Fresno) with 23 and freshman Chloe Welch (Exeter) and freshman Britney Rogers (Edison, Fresno), both with 20.

Against Hartnell, Cervantes scored 11 of Reedley's first 14 points and finished with a game-high of 22. Conley followed with 20 points and 15 rebounds. Welch had 10 of her 19 points in the first quarter. Rogers finished with 17 points while freshman Toree Bland (Washington Union) had 7 points, 9 rebounds, and 9 assists.
