Men's Golf Places Second At NorCal Finals. Next Up State!

On a pleasant, but typical coastal day in Monterey, with temperatures in the high 50's and breezy conditions in the afternoon, the Reedley College Tigers played solid team golf, and were the Runner-Ups at the Northern California Regional Championships!!!  The Tigers were edged out by tournament host Monterey Peninsula College by 3 shots at the end of the day.  The Tigers had won 4 of the previous 5 Regionals (2015, 2016, 2018, 2019). 2020 and 2021 were canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. In a format that matches the best teams from all of Northern California, Reedley came out in the morning round and played very efficiently, shooting a round of 376, the best team score of the AM round.  Leading the way for the Tigers was Jacob Moller, who posted a great round of EVEN par 72, holing out for an Eagle on the Par 5 13th hole in the 1st Round. Cole Obrigewitsch and Emil Eriksson followed with very impressive +1 over par rounds of 73.  Miguel Villa shot a competitive round of 76.  Jack Peters capped the morning round scoring by posting an 82.  The 376 score placed the Tigers in 1st place, 3 shots ahead of Monterey Peninsula College.  The Tigers felt they did not play as well as they were capable, and knew that a strong afternoon round would enable them to make a serious run for yet another Northern California Regional Championship!  After a quick lunch break, the Tigers were back on the course, this time starting their round with a bit more windy conditions for the afternoon.  Round #2 leader for the Tigers was Emil Eriksson, who posted a very solid round of 75.  Emil's round was one of the best rounds in the afternoon.  Only 4 players broke 75 in the PM round. Cole Obrigewitsch and Patrick Sperling both shot good rounds of 5 over par 77.  Jack Peters added a 79 for the Tigers in Round #2. Jacob Moller added an 81 to complete the scoring on the day for Reedley.  The 389 total was the 4th best team score of the afternoon and gave the Tigers a 2-round team score for the day of 765.  The Tigers finished 7 shots ahead of 3rd place Sierra College, and 11 shots clear of 4th place Folsom Lake College, the other colleges to qualify for the State Championships next Monday.  Also of note, Freshmen Emil Eriksson (73-75 = 148) and Freshmen Cole Obrigewitsch (73-77 = 150) were named to the All-Northern California Regional Team as a result of their efforts on this NorCal Monday.  These Tigers were 2 out of the Top 4 players overall in scoring out of the 50 total players for the day.  Next up on the schedule will be a 7th straight appearance at the State Championships at Soboba Springs Golf Course in San Jacinto on Monday for another 36-hole tournament to determine the best teams and individual players in the State for 2022!
