Tigers Drop Season Opener 80-67 to Modesto

It is hard to win a basketball game when you make only 2 of 22 3-point attempts.

That was the story on Tuesday night in Reedley for head coach T.J. Jennings' squad as the Tigers dropped an 80-67 decision to Modesto Junior College in the season opener for both teams.

Reedley missed all 12 of its shots behind the arc in the second half as Modesto erased a 33-32 halftime deficit. The visiting Pirates scored the first five points of the second half and never looked back.

Freshman Ruben Parks (Edison, Fresno) and sophomore Jeron Bowers (Hoover, Fresno) each had 21 for Reedley to lead all scorers. Parks, who had 13 of Reedley's 30 second half points, also had 12 rebounds. Bowers had 16 first half points but was in foul trouble in the second half while adding five assists. No other Tiger recorded more than five points in the contest.

Sophomore forward Nick Obazuaye came off the bench to lead Modesto with 16 points and 12 rebounds while Jemeil King netted all of his 14 points in the second half.

Reedley returns to the court on Thursday in Fairfield in the Solano College Tournament, facing Shasta College in the 3 pm tournament opener.
