Tiger Baseball Wins Against Golden West

Three was a key number for the Reedley College Tiger baseball team last week They picked up three wins in four games and will take a season record of 7-2 into Thursday's 4 pm matchup in Reedley against the undefeated Sacramento City College Panthers. On Saturday afternoon, Reedley hosts Gavilan College at 1 pm before opening Central Valley Conference action at 2 pm against the Taft College Cougars.

Taft has the worst non-conference record in the CVC at 1-7.

Tiger sophomore outfielder Jake Renteria had a Saturday to remember in the 6-5 win over Golden West. Renteria slammed three triples in five plate appearances and drove in two runs. His face eighth inning triple down the right-field line drove in the tying and go-ahead runs. He had another triple in Friday's 14-1 victory over Mission College.

Matthew Mathis threw seven innings of no-hit ball in the win over Mission. The freshman from Clovis East allowed just three baserunners in the seven innings. The first was a leadoff walk in the second. He retired 13 batters in a row before two Mission hitters reached on infield errors in the seventh. He finished with nine strikeouts.

In his first start, Mathis took a perfect game into the fifth inning before hitting a batter and allowing two singles in the fifth inning.

The Tiger offense put together a 14-hit attack. The biggest inning was the fourth when they scored six runs on only one hit, a bases-loaded triple by Renteria.

On Thursday night, Reedley was hitless with runners in scoring position in a 6-1 loss to Golden West. Jesse Holguin reached base in all four at-bats for the Tigers on three walks and a single. He also scored the only Reedley run.

On Feb. 4, Reedley won on the road as they edged Modesto 2-1. Mathis scored the deciding run on a single by Alex Ortiz. Mathis finished with two singles. Blake Costa was the winning pitcher.
